MISSION STATEMENT
The Design & Technology team are committed to a secure, caring and working environment through an education which leads to an enrichment of mind and body as was envisaged by Edmund Rice. The department aims to prepare the pupils for their long difficult passage through life with true Christian values. Pupils are encouraged to develop their problem solving skills, creativity, flexibility, visual awareness through the use of technology and design in solving problems.
KEY STAGE 3 COURSE OUTLINE
Technology & Design is a subject that is taught to all pupils from Year 8 to Year 10. During this time the pupils cover a wide range of topics which include:
Health & Safety in the workshop
Electronics
Materials (Wood, Plastic & Metals)
Welding
Computers (Information Communication Technology)
CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled)
CAD (Computer Aided Design)
Pupils are encouraged to express their creativity and design ideas in the manufacture of practical projects. This year, the Year 9 pupils wanted to produce Bird Boxes and Feeders to be placed on the trees within the school.
After designing and developing their ideas, through the use of drawings, computers and costings, finished models were produced, assembled and fitted
to trees within the school grounds.
Enterprising students from Belfast schools were guests of honour at a special ‘Enterprise Showcase' organised by
CCEA and presented by UTV's Julian Simmons.Year 9 students at St Colm's High School, St Louise's Comprehensive College and St Gemma's High School have been busy developing their own enterprising
ideas for a new product or service to benefit their school or local community.
Through their participation in the ‘Ready Steady Enterprise' programme that is currently being piloted in their schools, Year 9 students have been working in groups to develop and even implement business plans for a range of enterprising initiatives. The programme aims to develop their creativity, teamwork and entrepreneurial skills.The ‘Enterprise Showcase' in the Millennium Community Centre gave these budding entrepreneurs the opportunity to use IT, art and drama to present their ideas to other students, teachers and business representatives.
The Assessment of Technology & Design is through formal tests, set by the department at Christmas and at the end of the academic year. Progress of the pupils will also be assessed throughout the year via homework's and the completion of practical projects within the classroom environment.
GCSE / A-LEVEL COURSE OUTLINE

At the end of Year 10 (Key Stage 3) pupils have the option to choose Technology & Design as one of their GCSE subjects. The subject will be offered at three tiers, Higher, Foundation and a newly introduced Half Unit. The department has also initiated learning options at Post 16, and other vocational topics relevant to Technology & Design. The department has also introduced Occupational Studies Engineering at Key Stage 4 as a new and worthy option. As a subject, Technology & Design is valuable in encouraging success in a range of related topics such as Literacy, Numeracy and the development of a pupil's natural creativity.
PUPILS ACCEPT ST MARYS UNIVERSITY COLLEGE TECHNOLOGY CHALLENGE
St Marys College offered a technology challenge to local schools and CBS were glad to accept their offer. All the pupils enjoyed the field trip and were very impressed with the facilities on hand.The day was very successful and the culmination was the presentation of certificates to all pupils.
