FRENCH


MISSION STATEMENT
There are two highly experienced language teachers in the French Department. We are a very successful department, constantly achieving high grades in GCSE and many of our pupils continue their study of French to A Level and higher awards.

YEAR 8 COURSE OUTLINE
French is introduced through song, role plays and games. Here is a brief summary of what the year 8 pupils will be able to do:
• greet each other in French
• count up to 100
• introduce themselves and their family and their pets
• discuss weather conditions
• describe school life

YEAR 9 COURSE OUTLINE
In year 9 pupils are gradually introduced to the grammar of the language through:
• prepositions
• The Present tense of Aller
The following topics are taught in a fun way:
• Directions
• Places in the town
• Telling the time
• Buying food for a party and many more

YEAR 10 COURSE OUTLINE
Pupils by now have grasped a linguistic and grammatical approach to the language are confident enough to:
• Write letters in the target language
• Write short descriptions of themselves and their family
• Prepare presentations integrating their ICT skills
Much of the work covered this year is in preparation for GCSE
At the end of Year 10 pupils have the option of continuing their study of French or concentrating on Irish or other subjects.

YEAR 11 COURSE OUTLINE
We follow the AQA syllabus for GCSE and use Métro as our main text book. Pupils are expected to complete at least 3 pieces of coursework:
• Mon uniforme idéal – describe your ideal uniform
• Mes Vacances – describe your holidays
• Mon stage en enterprise – Write an account of your work experience
One or two of these will completed by the end of year 11.

YEAR 12 COURSE OUTLINE In this year we concentrate on developing examination skills. Pupils will become familiar with;
• Past papers, reading and listening
• Oral presentations
The Oral examination is usually in the second week of May and pupils are prepared well in advance for this examination.
